“Many who are first will be last, and the last shall be first,” Mk. 10:31

The world today often gives little respect to the poor and needy of society. Jesus explained that in the world to come, the values of this world will be reversed. Those who seek status, fame, and fortune on earth will have none in heaven. Those who are humble here will be great in heaven. The corrupt condition of our society encourages confusion in values. We are bombarded by messages that tell us how to be important and feel good, and Jesus’ teaching on service to others seems out of place. But those who have humbly served others are most qualified to be great in heaven.

Father, examine our hearts and teach us to walk humbly in your grace, serving others and thinking more of them than ourselves. Amen

“The Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before Him,” Hab. 2:20

Idols have no life, no personhood, no power; they are empty chucks of stone or wood. Temples built to idols are equally empty. But the Lord is in His temple. He is a real being; alive and powerful. He is the only God. There are no other gods. Idolaters command their idols to save them, help them, and bless them; all to no avail. We worship the one and only, true, living, God. We are told to come before Him in silent awe, with great respect, and reverence. We acknowledge that He is in control and that He knows what He is doing, in this world and in our lives. But He longs for us to come before Him, to worship Him, and spend time with Him each day. Have you thought about taking a moment to say, “Lord here am I?” He will be happy to hear from you.

Gracious loving God, you alone are worthy of all we are. Receive our gratitude today. For you are our God and we love you for loving us each moment of each day. Amen

“Turn from all known sin and spend your time in doing good. Try to live in peace with everyone; work hard at it,” Ps. 34:14

Somehow we often think that peace should come to us with no effort. But David explained that we are to seek and pursue peace in every area of our life. A person who wants peace cannot be argumentative, mean spirited or contentious. Such behavior only adds to disharmony and conflict. Because peaceful relationships come from our efforts at peacemaking, work hard at living in peace with others each day.

God of mercy, create in us the desire to live a life free from sin and its ravaging consequences. Teach us to follow your ways that lead to doing good and bring your peace to our hectic lives. Amen

“The Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name,” Ex. 20:7

God’s name is special because it carries His personal identity. Using it frivolously or in a curse is so common today that we may fail to realize how serious it is. The way we use God’s name conveys how we feel about Him. We should respect His name and use it appropriately, speaking it in praise and worship rather than in curse or jest. We should not take lightly the abuse of or dishonoring of His name.

Father, your name is above all names and you are holy without equal. May we honor your love and faithfulness to us through the rightful use of your good name. Amen

“I will rejoice in the Lord; I will be happy in the God of my salvation,” Habakkuk 3:18

God will give his followers surefooted confidence through difficult times. None of us can escape the hardships and setbacks that come as a result of living in a broken world. The faith that changes the heart of believers in Christ is the same faith that sustains the hurting heart when tough times come. At the proper time God will bring about His justice completely, ridding the world of evil. In the meantime, God’s people need to live in the strength of his Spirit, confident in His ultimate victory over evil.

Lord, help me to be joyful and confident in my salvation.  Thank you for saving me from my sins. Amen

"O Israel, listen: Jehovah is our God, Jehovah alone,” Deut. 6:4

This verse reveals that there were not many gods, as many ancient religions believed. Jehovah (or Yahaweh) is the only true God. The nation of Israel was about to enter a land with many gods. Both then and now, there are people who prefer to place their trust in many different “gods.” But the day is coming soon when God will be recognized as the only one. He will be the King over all the earth (Zech. 14:9). He waits for you to call on Him and trust in Him alone. You will discover He is there for you today.

Father our needs are so great and your desire evident. You want us to trust you. May we begin today to trust in You, as You call us to do. Amen

“Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow,” Is. 1:18

A deep stain is virtually impossible to remove from clothing, and the stain of sin seems equally permanent. But God can remove the stain of sin from our lives just as he promised to do for the Israelites. We don’t have to go through life permanently soiled. Through prayer we can be assured that Christ has forgiven our worst sins and removed our most indelible stains. He loves you and His death at Calvary paid the price for your sins. So, take a moment and receive His wonderful forgiveness today.

Father, your grace is unlimited and we, as sinners, need your precious gift of forgiveness. Please accept our prayers of thanks for such unmerited love. Amen

“Live a quiet life, minding your own business and doing your own work,” 1 Thess. 4:11

The Bible is so practical. It is loaded with wisdom and sound council. This is part of what it means to live as a Christian. It means we should be responsible in every area of our life. You can hardly be effective when you share your faith with others, if people don’t respect you for meddling in their business. Whatever you do, do it faithfully and be a positive influence in the world.

Father, give us the wisdom to know when we need to stay out of other people’s business. Amen

“I am giving you the choice today between God’s blessing or God’s curse! There will be blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God,” Deut. 11:26-27

It is amazing that God offered the Israelites a choice between blessings and curses. It is even more amazing that most of them actually chose the curses through their disobedience. We have the same fundamental choice today. To choose our own way is to travel on a dead-end road, but to choose God is to receive eternal life. Have you chosen the blessing of God; eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ? He is a prayer away. Ask Him to give you eternal life today, and He will.

Father, by your Spirit grant eternal salvation to all who call upon the name of Christ. Amen

“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving,” Col. 4:2

Persistence demonstrates our faith that God answers our prayers. Faith shouldn’t die if the answers don’t come immediately, for the delay may be God’s way of working His will out in your life. When you feel weary in your prayers and aren’t sure if God is listening, remember that God is present, always listening, always acting; maybe not in ways you had hoped, but in ways He knows are best for you, and His will to be accomplished. Have you grown tired of praying? Don’t give up. Prayer is you main connection to God and your prayers should be coupled with the reading of His Word.

Father, give us the encouragement to pray without ceasing, especially when things don’t seem to be going our way or when the circumstances seem bleak. You are our mighty God. Amen
