Central Passage
Deuteronomy 6:10-19
Subject
Disciple-Making in the Family
Description

Disciple-making in the family is building off of our emphasis to abide because if we are not abiding as individuals we cannot teach our children to abide. Abiding is the essence of being a disciple.

Review Deut. 6:1-9: Obedience demonstrates respect for God and Obedience demonstrates love for God. There is not one part of who we are and what we do that is not to demonstrate our love for God. Parents and grandparents you are the primary disciplers of your children. Discipling your children never stops.

We teach our children about God at all times in all places. Most importantly, we teach our children to love God and to demonstrate that love in obedience.

If we want to be countercultural, if we want to point our children closer to King Jesus, then we must begin to ask questions such as…

  • How you spent time with God today through prayer, Scripture reading, and memorization?
  • What did God teach you about Himself today?
  • What did God teach you about yourself today?

We must point our children to Him whom we are love and imitate. We don't want good children, we want Godly children for generations to come. Lead your children so that your children’s children will love God with their entire being and you will see that love demonstrated by respect and obedience to God’s Word for generations to come.

Deuteronomy 6:10-19. 10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

16 “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. 17 You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you. 18 And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers 19 by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised.

Vs 10b-11: God gave you everything. Never forget it Israel!

Vs 11c-15: Not only do we demonstrate our love for God by our Fear of Him and our obedience to Him, but we also demonstrate our love for God by worshipping Him alone. The LORD loves you and He is jealous for you.

Never forget to fear, serve, and worship Him alone.

Vs 16: Moses says, remember that time at Massah where you tested me by demanding water, Never forget it and don't do it again.

Vs 17-19: In the same way we teach them, they are to be diligently kept.

We teach God’s commands at all times in all places and likewise we keep God’s commands at all times in all places.

Moses says it another way, Do right, Do good, not what those on earth say is right and good but do what God says is right and good. God’s Word tells us what is right and what is good.

Never forget to demonstrate your love for God by fear, respect, obedience, worship, and service to God from the heart at all times in all places.
