Central Passage
Deuteronomy 5:16
Subject
The 10 Commandments: Relevant or Not?
Description

Jesus summarized Commandments 5-10 as loving others. Commandments 5-10 are impossible without a proper relationship with God, Commandments 1-4. Love is an internal thing that is always expressed externally. The 5th Commandment gives us our first expression of love for others which is love for our parents.

Deuteronomy 5:16

16 “ ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

Preliminary understandings:

  1. Children will have one mother and one father.
  2. Honor your parents because they are your God-given authority.
  3. Set a Godly example worth honoring.

Ephesians 6:1-3 The Bible says, Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

Children obey your Father and Mother in the LORD. Emphasis is on in the Lord. Paul here was addressing children as responsible members of the Church in Ephesus. The verb translated obey is in the strongest form which means absolute obedience to your parents in Christ. Again keep in mind these are Godly parents who are to be obeyed. The whole point of this passage is to have a faithful community of believers. It’s obedience for the sake of Godly families for generations to come. Children, the way you love and respect your parents demonstrates how much you love God. When you love God you will follow His commandment to Honor your Father and Mother. Obedience to Christian parents is a part of Christian discipleship which takes place primarily in the home.

Main Point: Honor your parents by following their Godly example, advice, and instruction.

Honoring your Father and Mother is impossible without an abiding relationship with God!
